Benefits of Eating Fish May Depend on PreparationEating fish is great for weight management and heart health, but only if you cook it the right way. Fish contains a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids, which can dramatically decrease your risk for cardiac death. Men, especially, have been shown to benefit from getting at least 3.3 grams of omega-3 fatty acids a day. But in order to receive the health benefits of fish, it's best to boil or bake your seafood. Research shows that eating fried, dried or salted fish causes limited to no decrease in the risk for heart disease. In fact, fried, dried and salted fish may actually increase your risk for poor heart health. While men seem to derive significant benefit from eating fish alone, research suggests that the omega-3 fatty acids in fish alone isn't enough to significantly decrease the risk for heart disease in women. A recent study released by the American Heart Association was able to show a direct correlation between the amount of boiled or baked fish men ate and their risk for cardiac death. The study was unable to find the same link in women who ate boiled or baked fish. However, adding low-sodium soy sauce or tofu, which also contain phytoestrogens, did help women combat cardiac complications. Fish, much like fruits and vegetables, contains intrinsic properties that can promote good health in the body. But those benefits can be quickly reduced or eliminated entirely if cooked improperly with fatty batters, frying or salting. |
