Do Men and Women Store Fat Differently

Many women joke that if they overeat, the fat goes right to their hips. Just as many men joke about their midsections growing into a beer bellies. It turns out there’s some truth in these stereotypes. Male and female bodies store fat in different ways. In fact, a recent study using mice showed that the composition of male and female fat differs on a genetic level.

The study also made connections between women’s hormones and belly fat in middle age. For overweight middle-aged women, this could have implications in hormone replacement therapy.

What does this mean for you? While fat may be more likely to grow in one place or another, it still depends on diet. The mice in the study were given a high fat diet in order to gain weight. To help combat fat in the midsection or hips, work on a healthier diet and regularly activity.
