During LAP-BAND surgery, the size of the stomach is decreased so that it will only hold about four ounces of food at a time. This allows an obese patient to feel full with less food, helping them decrease their daily caloric intake and lose weight.
While the lap band will restrict how much food you can eat at once, it can't make decisions about which foods you will eat. In order to safely lose weight with the lap band surgery, there are some dietary recommendations you must choose to follow. Part of that includes knowing what foods to avoid.
Foods to avoid after lap band surgery include:
Candy: Most candies are loaded with calories without offering any nutritional value. Eating candy and other foods high in sugar may also cause severe diarrhea because they aren't held in the stomach long enough to be properly digested.
Carbonated beverages: Regular (or full-flavored) sodas can cause diarrhea because of the sugar content. They also add an excessive amount of calories to your diet without providing any of the nutrients and vitamins your body needs to function properly. Even sugar-free carbonated beverages, like diet sodas, should be avoided because they can cause the stomach pouch to swell.
Fatty Foods: Fatty, fried foods are counterproductive to your weight loss efforts. They may make you too full to eat healthy foods that provide proper nutrition, and the saturated and trans fat can be dangerous for your heart health.
Fibrous Foods: Although fiber is an important part of any diet, some vegetables can be difficult to eat even when they are cooked. Exercise caution with foods such as broccoli, asparagus, celery, pineapple, and rhubarb.
Your bariatric surgery center should provide you with nutritional counseling and dietary recommendations before and after you have lap band surgery. Successfully losing weight and improving your health requires you to make healthy eating habits in addition to eating less.
