Is Your Inner Critic Preventing You from Losing Weight?Have you started diets, but failed to lose weight long-term? Do you lose a little and then gain it back? Do you feel like you just don't have enough willpower to be successful? You may be battling the voice of your own inner critic. Who said that? For some people, a constant monologue of negative thoughts playing through their mind interferes with their ability to achieve and enjoy weight loss success. They are constantly reminded that they're overweight, messed up, can't succeed, or have failed in the past. If they lose 10 pounds, they remind themselves that they still have 30 more to go before they reach their goal. This constant negative self-chatter is the voice of your inner critic, and some experts believe that the secret to your weight loss success is learning to silence it. Why self-talk matters. Everyone experiencing setbacks when they're working toward a long-term goal like weight loss. But if you experience a setback and beat yourself up over it, telling yourself that you always feel and will never succeed, it can be difficult to get back on track. Likewise, most weight loss experts agree that it's important to celebrate small successes in order to keep yourself motivated. If successfully going to the gym everyday for a week or losing a few pounds is quickly overshadowed by all the things you haven't (yet) achieved, you're likely to have a difficult time sticking with your goals. Change the dialogue. One of the best ways to silence your inner critic and support your weight loss goals is to add positive self-talk to the dialogue. Make a point of affirming your positive accomplishments, talents and strengths. Congratulate yourself when it's deserved. Practice talking to yourself the way you encourage a close friend. |
