Plastic Surgery After Weight Loss SurgeryIf you're considering weight loss surgery, or have had weight loss surgery and are starting to see results, you may be worried about excess skin that can be left after a dramatic weight loss. Will you be happy with the way your body looks after reaching your goal weight? What are your options if you're not? In some cases, people who lose a significant amount of weight (80-100 pounds typically) are left with excess skin folds that may be loose or saggy. This may create an undesired look and even camouflage much of the weight loss. This excess skin occurs if the skin is not elastic enough to retain it's pre-obesity shape and size. If your weight loss leaves you with sagging skin that you're uncomfortable with, you can have plastic surgery that removes the excess skin. These surgeries, commonly known as body contouring surgery, are usually done about two years after a weight loss surgery. It's recommended that the patient has been able to stabilize their weight for a few months before having surgery in order to prevent complications and reduce the risk for additional surgeries. Will you have to have plastic surgery if you have weight loss surgery? Not necessarily. The younger you are, the less likely you are to need plastic surgery after weight loss. Younger skin is generally more elastic than older skin. In addition, people who don't smoke and have protected their skin from sun damage will generally have more elasticity in their skin. |
