Reversing Social Isolation

Often when people feel insecure about their weight, they also begin to doubt their perceptions. When this happens, they can become so insecure and downright scared of being in public or around people that they start to isolate themselves. People who battle obesity often find social isolation preferable to the negative attitudes that often greet them when they venture out in public.

However, in order to live a happy, well-adjusted and well-rounded life, social interaction of some kind is necessary. But when you have socially isolated yourself, this can seem impossible.

The first step toward reversing social isolation is to call a friend or family member whom you trust completely. Ask that person to come visit with you on a relatively regular basis. As you begin to be comfortable socializing with that person, take your meetings outside to a park or other non-threatening environment.

Once strolling outside in a park with that friend or family member seems like nothing to you, call another friend to join you. Once you get the hang of socializing with more than one person in a setting outside your home, you can gradually progress to a mall or restaurant setting.

Bariatric surgery support groups provide another option for interacting with people in a nurturing and non-judgmental environment. These groups are usually open to anyone regardless of whether you have already had weight loss surgery or are simply considering it.
