Ways to Shave Calories From Your Diet

For many people, losing weight is a matter of a lot of little steps leading to big results over time. Learn about little ways to cut calories throughout the day in order to lose and better manage your weight.

5 Little Ways to Shave Calories

  1. Use your plates to practice portion control. Simply put, eat off smaller dishes. Using smaller bowls and plates tells your brain that you've had enough food, even if you've actually eaten less.
  2. Take your time. Taking less than 20 to 30 minutes to eat a meal can lead to overeating and feeling uncomfortably full when you're finished. On the other hand, eating slowly helps you consume only as much as your body needs to feel satisfied.
  3. Practice not cleaning your plate. Make a point of always leaving a little food on your plate and you'll learn to use your body's internal signals - instead of how much food is left - as your guide for when you've had enough.
  4. Don’t eat out of a bag or box. When you eat out of a package, you're likely to keep eating until it’s all gone. Unfortunately, a package may contain more than one serving size. Instead, measure out one serving into a small bowl.
  5. Rethink your drinks. One of the easiest ways to sneak extra calories into our diets is through our beverages. Soft drinks, juice cocktails, energy drinks, specialty coffee drinks, and alcohol are notoriously high in calories and can be consumed even more quickly than solid foods. Stick with water whenever you can.
