Weight Loss Self Sabotage Behaviors

You know you shouldn't eat that cookie. You realize that a pint of ice cream is not on your post surgical diet. You understand that fried chicken is not the same as skinless grilled chicken. Yet, time and time again, you find yourself indulging in these forbidden foods while attempting to follow your diet after weight loss surgery. How is it possible to know it is damaging to eat them, and yet still do? Welcome to the understanding of self sabotage.

There are many causes for self sabotage:

Control issues: Often, by sabotaging our own efforts, we gain control over our outcomes. We can remain comfortable in the pattern we have already established and we don't have to deal with any unexpected consequences.

Fear of failure: To some, the fear of failing can induce a negative attitude which can result in self sabotage. Rather than face the emotional pain of trying something and failing, we sabotage ourselves. This failure is often easier for us to accept than failure that comes after actually trying.

Negative self image: Believing that we can't do something does not help in trying to deny our urges. Instead, it helps create an environment in which we sabotage the success we don't think we can achieve.

Identifying the causes of self sabotage is a milestone in your weight loss journey. Once you know the 'why' of your actions you can take steps to resolve them and continuing on your way to better health.
