What Causes Weight Gain?

It happens to many of us, despite our best efforts. Our clothes begin to fit a little tighter and then the scale confirms that we've managed to gain weight without noticing. In most cases, the weight gain is a surprise as few of us were planning to pack on extra pounds. So what causes this weight creep?

4 Things That Cause Weight Gain

Lack of exercise

Have you gotten to busy to go to the gym? Has a change in jobs left you sitting more than walking or standing during the day? A decrease in activity means you're burning fewer calories than what your body is used to, and weight gain is almost inevitable.

Too many calories

Have you been dining out more often and eating large portions? Are you snacking at home late at night or while you work? Much like changing your exercise habits, changing your dietary habits will almost surely lead to extra pounds.

Not enough rest

While too little exercise and too many calories are well known causes of weight gain, you may not realize that a lack of sleep can affect your weight. A lack of rest stresses your body and causes it to store fat more efficiently.

Too much stress

Much like not getting enough sleep, having too much stress in your life puts a strain on your physical well being as much as it does your emotional and mental state. Stress hormones in our bodies have been linked to an increase in belly fat, which is the fat most likely to cause health problems.
