Yoga Exercises for Beginners

Practicing yoga can help improve your flexibility, strengthen your muscles, improve your posture, and stimulate weight loss. But it can also be intimidating if you're not already incredibly flexible. Most of us have seen pictures of yoga practitioners twisting themselves into pretzel-like shapes! How do they do that? How could you do that?

Fortunately, you don't have to be exceptionally flexible to practice yoga. Doing a few simple yoga exercises every day can improve your health, even if you can't touch your toes.

Simple Yoga Exercises For Beginners

  • Seated Twists: Sit on the floor with one leg crossed over the other. Slowly turn your upper body toward your bent leg. Turn your head in the same direction as your upper body and look over your shoulder. This simple twist can help stretch the muscles in your back and relieve tension.
  • Forward Bends: To practice a standing forward bend, begin on your hands and knees on the floor. Curl your toes under and push upwards, extending your arms and legs as much as you can. To practice a seated forward bend, sit with your legs straight out in front of you and bend forward slowly, as far as you can. These poses help relieve high blood pressure, stress, headaches, insomnia and fatigue.

In addition to seated twists and forward bends, beginners may also ease into a yoga routine with back bends and balancing poses. DVDs or yoga classes aimed towards beginners can help you learn proper technique.
