Steps to LAP-BAND® Weight Loss Surgery

STEP 1: New Patient Information Seminar

The Bariatric surgeon will speak with you and others that are interested in the LAP-BAND System during one of our free informational seminars. These seminars are designed to be informative, educational and interesting. The benefits and risks of the surgery will be discussed as well as the necessary lifestyle changes associated with surgery. There will be an opportunity for you to question the surgeon, the bariatric coordinator and several patients who have already had the LAP-BAND System procedure. At the seminar you will be able to pick up additional information and our New Patient Packet. This packet contains program information as well as instructions on how to proceed.

STEP 2: Complete New Patient Profile

Return a copy of the New Patient Profile and a copy of your insurance card to our office.

STEP 3: Initial Consultation with Surgeon

Schedule your initial consultation with the surgeon by calling the office at 386-673-8588.

Prior to your visit, we will contact your insurance company and verify whether or not you have weight loss surgery benefits. If you do, we will also confirm the eligibility criteria that you must meet for your individual policy.

If weight loss surgery is a 'specific exclusion' under your policy, we will notify you prior to your visit, to discuss the self-pay fees.

STEP 4: Psychological Consultation

We will provide you with the names of our psychologists. They are trained in the behaviors and lifestyle changes specific to weight loss surgery patients.

STEP 5: Bariatric Team Meets and Surgical Clearance Given

The bariatric team will meet and determine if surgery may be scheduled or additional clearances are needed before surgery.

STEP 6: Pre-Operative Education Class

This class will review the LAP-BAND System procedure, possible complications, and the required life style and dietary changes.

STEP 7: Pre Operative Registration Visit

One week before your scheduled surgical date you will sign your operative consents and complete the required pre-op testing and lab work.

All self-pay fees and insurance co-pays and deductibles will be payable at this visit.

STEP 8: Surgery

Surgery is expected to be done on an outpatient procedure.  You will be discharged to home when you are awake and tolerating clear liquids without difficulty.

If you have sleep apnea or any other complicating medical condition, you may stay overnight and be discharged the next morning.

STEP 9: Follow Up Appointnments

You will return for your first follow-up appointment in one week. Further follow-up visits well be scheduled for week two, week four, and then every four to six weeks for the first year.

These follow-up visits will include a review of your eating habits, nutrition and exercise regimen. Committing yourself to these follow up visits is vital to your success.

You should continue seeing your Primary Care Provider and all specialists, as adjustments of your medication dosages will be necessary as you lose weight.
